Liquid Stage
Liquid Stage: the Lure of Surfing
I caught this on our PBS station a couple times and had it recorded to dvd. The one hour documentary recalls the history of surfing before it became a "sport" and much about the lifestyle and the growth of marketing and competition.
Don't worry, the producers don't overlook the art and true nature of surfing. The above link takes you to the movies homepage where you can watch a web-ready version.

Surfs Up - the Video Game
Why I like this game:
a) its surfing!
b) its rendered visually appealing
c) the tons of unlockable soundtracks
d) its actually FUN to play
As a rule I despise games that have movie tie-ins. This is because they are utter .... ummm, junk. Cranked out by merchandisers with one dimensional gameplay, graphics, and gamer satisfaction.
I bought this for Junior's PS2 because he's crazy about the movie. And like the movie, this tie-in was better than I expected. Some reviews slammed this one because the game can easily be beaten over a weekend. I'm not one of those people who care how long, as long as it's fun. I also liked being able to pick what mood music to play, and there is a wide selection of around 20 catchy tracks to choose from. Like the tunes, locations, competitors, boards and accessories are unlocked as you go, competing in a new location (all truthfully re imagined ala the movie), racking up points with various maneuvers, tricks, targets and pickups. You can also go back to previous locations to re compete and nab your missed pickups. The two player option also lets you compete against family or friend (Junior has too much free time, he got the best of the old man).
The pace is fast, the moves are cool, the music is hot... not difficult, but lots of fun. I wanna play it again!

Surf's Up
Why I like this movie:
a) it has waves!
b) it has surfers (so they happen to be penguins, I'm not prejudice)
c) the shmaltzy storyline
d) beautifully rendered visually
e) who can resist Chicken Joe?
So, Junior and I took this in at the local theater after we saw the teaser earlier for another movie (Spiderman 3 to be specific). It was a forgone conclusion we wouldn't pass up this one up. After all, how often does a feature length surf movie come out?
Anyway, I fully expected to be bored by this one. Instead I was turned around by all the lush eye-candy artistry, the sports mockumentry story telling, and of course the whole shmaltzy Geek/Big Z background storyline (what can I say? I'm a sucker for shmaltzy). The people who made the movie showed they get it, a real honest love of the sport - and remind us that if you lose sight of why you fell in love with it to start with, you should either wake up or get out.
In this age of CGI realities, its obvious there never really was a Big Z's hidden beach and board shack... but there ought to be.
